OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether compression therapy after thermal ablation of varicose veins can improve the prognosis of patients. METHODS: Systematic research were applied for Chinese and English electronic databases(PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP Databases). Eligible prospective studies that comparing the efficacy of compression therapy and non-compression therapy on patients after thermal ablation of varicose veins were included. The interest outcome such as pain, quality of life (QOL), venous clinical severity score (VCSS), time to return to work and complications were analyzed. RESULTS: 10 studies were of high quality, and randomized controlled trials involving 1,545 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. At the same time, the meta-analysis showed that the application of compression therapy improved pain (SMD: -0.51, 95% CI: -0.95, -0.07) but exhibited no statistically significant effect on QOL (SMD: 0.04, 95% CI: -0.08, 0.16), VCSS (MD: -0.05, 95% CI: -1.19, 1.09), time to return to work (MD: -0.43, 95% CI: -0.90, 0.03), total complications (RR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.27, 1.09), and thrombosis (RR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.31, 1.62). CONCLUSION: Compression therapy after thermal ablation of varicose veins can slightly relieve pain, but it has not been found to be associated with improvement in other outcomes.

Objective: This study aims to assess the impact of details management on the handling of instruments in the operating room, comprehensively evaluating its impact on device intactness, economic efficiency, overall care quality, and physician satisfaction. Methods: We analyzed 1050 procedural packs used in our hospital from March to December 2019. The control group included 525 procedural packs with conventional management (March-August 2019), while the experimental group had 525 instrument packs with details management. Outcome measures included operating room device use, surgical care quality, and device tracking outcome. Results: Details management showed significantly higher device intactness (97.73%), a marked decrease in device preparation errors (0.00%), and more efficient device checking time (1.13±0.41) compared to conventional management (84.09%, 11.36%, 2.85±1.03) (P < .05). The experimental group had higher scores in intraoperative nursing ability, nursing operating specification, nursing staff professionalism, and device care quality (9.08±0.31, 9.23±0.32, 9.17±0.55, 97.81±0.96) compared to the control group (8.11±0.67, 7.98±0.98, 8.35±0.69, 75.25±1.87) (P < .05). Details management was associated with higher economic efficiency and lower incidences of device loss and mix-up compared to conventional management (P < .05). Conclusions: Implementing details management in instrument handling positively affects device intactness, economic efficiency, overall care quality, and physician satisfaction. It enhances device intactness, reduces device checking time, improves economic efficiency and overall care quality, and increases physician satisfaction. The findings provide insights into the benefits of a detailed instrument management approach in a hospital setting.

With the accelerated aging of the population, orthopedic injuries have become more collective. Among them, the incidence of ankle fractures remains high. Surgery is an effective way to treat ankle fractures by utilizing special surgical site, complex anatomical structure, and specific surgical methods. With surgical approach, it is easy for basis postoperative blood loss, pain, swelling, and other problems. After surgery, most patients suffer from symptoms of fear, increased pain sensitivity, and excessive irrational concerns about physical movement or activity. Compression cold therapy combines cold therapy with air pressure therapy to ease local exudation, constrict blood vessels, improve circulation, relieve pain, and control inflammation through the effects of low temperature and pressure. Application during the rehabilitation period can prevent joint swelling, reduce muscle soreness, and promote the functional recovery of limbs, which provides an effective guarantee for postoperative rehabilitation of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia. Based on this, it is very important to evaluate the application and effect of self-made compression cold therapy in postoperative rehabilitation of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia. This work proposes a one-dimensional deep convolutional neural network-based method; DenseNet for analyzing the rehabilitation effect of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia after ankle fracture surgery. The approach is to evaluate the rehabilitation effect of self-made compression cold therapy from the perspectives of feature reuse, attention mechanism, and feature decoupling. Experiments on the dataset show that the proposed neural network has better efficacy evaluation performance. The proposed systematic assessment based on the emerging deep learning network has great significance in healthcare domain, particularly in assessing applicability, side effects, and noninvasiveness of treatment methods.

Copper is known as a conductive metal but an inert catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction due to its inappropriate electronic structure. In this work, an active copper catalyst is prepared with high-energy surfaces by adopting the friction stir welding (FSW) technique. FSW can mix the immiscible Fe and Cu materials homogenously and heat them to a high temperature. Resultantly, α-Fe transforms into γ-Fe, and low-energy γ-Fe (100) and (110) surfaces induce the epitaxial growth of high-energy Cu (110) and (100) planes, respectively. After the removal of γ-Fe by acid etching, the copper electrode exposes high-energy surface and exhibits excellent acidic HER activity, even being superior to Pt foil at high current densities (>66 mA cm-2 ). Density functional theory calculation reveals that the high-energy surface favors the adsorption of hydrogen intermediate, thus accelerating the hydrogen evolution reaction. The epitaxial growth induced by FSW opens a new avenue toward engineering high-performance catalysts. In addition, FSW makes it possible to massively fabricate low-cost catalyst, which is advantageous to industrial application.

INTRODUCTION: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming more prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and can contribute to serious liver damage in this patient population. The aim of this study was to develop a risk nomogram for NAFLD in a Chinese population with T2DM. METHODS: A questionnaire survey, physical examination and biochemical indicator testing were performed on 874 patients with T2DM, and the collected data were used to evaluate the risk to develop NAFLD in T2DM patients. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis method was used to optimize variable selection by running cyclic coordinate descent with k-fold (tenfold in this case) cross-validation. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to build a predictive model by introducing the predictors selected from the LASSO regression analysis. The nomogram was developed based on the selected variables visually. A calibration plot, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to validate the model, with further assessment by external validation. RESULTS: A total of nine predictors, namely sex, age, total cholesterol (TC), body mass index (BMI), waistline, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum uric acid (SUA), course of disease and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), were identified by LASSO regression analysis from a total of 24 variables studied. The model constructed using these nine predictors displayed medium prediction ability, with an area under the ROC of 0.848 in the training set and 0.809 in the validation set. The DCA curve showed that the nomogram could be applied clinically if the risk threshold was between 48 and 91%, which was found to be between 44 and 82% in the external validation. CONCLUSION: Introducing sex, age, TC, BMI, waistline, DBP, SUA, course of disease and HDL-C into the risk nomogram increased its usefulness for predicting NAFLD risk in patients with T2DM.

Gastrodin (GAS), the main phenolic glycoside extracted from Gastrodia elata Blume, exhibited potential neuroprotective properties. Here we examined the protective effects of GAS against lead(Pb)-induced nerve injury in mice, and explores its underlying mechanisms. Our research findings revealed that GAS improved behavioral deficits in Pb-exposed mice. GAS reduced the accumulation of p-tau and amyloid-beta (Aß). GAS inhibited Pb-induced inflammation in the brain, as indicated by the decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). GAS increased the expression levels of NR2A and neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). GAS inhibited Pb-induced apoptosis of neurons in hippocampus tissue, as indicated by the decreased levels of pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and cleaved caspase-3. Furthermore, the neuroprotective effects of GAS were associated with inhibiting oxidative stress by modulating nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-mediated antioxidant signaling. GAS supplement activated the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and reduced the expression of Wnt inhibitor Dickkopf-1 (Dkk-1). Collectively, this study clarified that GAS exhibited neuroprotective property by anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptosis effects and its ability to regulate the Wnt/Nrf2 pathway.

Objectives: Serial measurements of sonographic fetal abdominal circumference (AC) are useful for monitoring fetal growth during pregnancy and are essential for predicting macrosomia. The study was aiming to compare the AC profiles of infants born to mothers with or without hyperglycemia in Chinese population.Subjects and methods: The "GDM Prevalence Study (GPS)" was a large study conducted in 22 hospitals in three large cities in China, which included 34,085 NGT (normal glucose tolerant) women, 8272 GDM (gestational diabetes mellitus) women and 729 DM (diabetes mellitus) women. A total of 116,740 scans and 103,377 valid AC measurements were performed for the NGT, GDM and DM groups at different gestational age. AC profiles and fetal growth rates at different stages of pregnancy were compared between different groups.Results: The overall AC growth rate (ß) was higher in the macrosomia group than in the no macrosomia group in NGT (ß =10.250 versus 9.541, p < .001), GDM (ß = 10.572 versus 9.705, p < .001) and DM (ß = 11.363 versus 9.924, p < .001) pregnancies. Significant differences were observed between NGT-macrosomia, GDM-macrosomia and DM-macrosomia. Significant differences were also noted between NGT-no macrosomia, GDM-no macrosomia and DM-no macrosomia women. Participants in NGT-macrosomia group exhibited larger AC values than NGT-no macrosomia group beginning at 21 gestational weeks, and GDM-macrosomia group exhibited larger AC values than GDM-no macrosomia group beginning at 22 gestational weeks. AC growth rate was higher in NGT-macrosomia and GDM-macrosomia groups than in the corresponding no macrosomia groups between 22 and 30 gestational weeks.Conclusions: The overall AC growth rates are higher in macrosomia group compared to the no macrosomia group in NGT, GDM as well as DM participants. The significant difference of AC growth rates in NGT-macrosomia and GDM-macrosomia indicate the possible differential underlying mechanisms in developing macrosomia with or without hyperglycemia exposure. Our study demonstrate that larger fetal AC measurements around 21-22 weeks are associated with subsequent diagnosis of macrosomia, suggesting that macrosomia management should be initiated much earlier than we thought.

Two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 has been considered to be one of the most promising semiconducting materials with the potential to be used in novel nanoelectronic devices. High carrier mobility in the semiconductor is necessary to guarantee a low power dissipation and a high switch speed of the corresponding electronic device. Strain engineering in 2D materials acts as an important approach to tailor and design their electronic and carrier transport properties. In this work, strain is introduced to MoS2 through perpendicularly building van der Waals heterostructures MoSe2-MoS2. Our first-principles calculations demonstrate that acoustic-phonon-limited electron mobility can be significantly enhanced in the heterostructures compared with that in pure multilayer MoS2. It is found that the effective electron mass and the deformation potential constant are relatively smaller in the heterostructures, which is responsible for the enhancement in the electron mobility. Overall, the electron mobility in the heterostructures is about 1.5 times or more of that in pure multilayer MoS2 with the same number of layers for the studied structures. These results indicate that MoSe2 is an excellent material to be heterostructured with multilayer MoS2 to improve the charge transport property.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the chemical structure of the new compound and investigate the protective effects of Tinosporaic acid A and B towards in-vitro neuro. METHODS: The structures of two new compounds were established by analyzing its 1D and 2D NMR spectra as well as HRESIMS. Their neuroprotective effects with respect to the antioxidant properties were evaluated by radical scavenging tests and hydrogen peroxide-injured oxidative stress model in PC12 cell lines. Cell morphology of treated PC12 cells was observed by phase contrast microscopy. In-vitro MTT assay, lactate dehydrogenase activity assay and oxidative stress markers (intracellular ROS production, MDA level, and caspase-3 activity) were used to evaluate the protective effects against hydrogen peroxide induced cytotoxicity in PC12 cells. RESULTS: The two new compounds, named Tinosporaic acid A and B, were isolated and identified from the stem bark of Tinospora hainanensis. Cell viability studies identified a representative concentration for each extract that was subsequently used to measure oxidative stress markers. Both extracts were able to reverse the oxidative damage caused by hydrogen peroxide, thus promoting PC12 cells survival. The concentration of Tinosporaic acid A and B were 86.34 µg/mL and 22.06 µg/mL respectively, which is neuroprotective for EC50. The results indicated that both of them significantly attenuated hydrogen peroxide-induced neurotoxicity. CONCLUSION: The two new compounds isolated from ethanol extracts of Tinospora hainanensis are the promising natural ones with neuroprotective activity and needed for further research.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors for hypertensive disorders and to study the main pregnancy outcomes in the Beijing area of China. STUDY DESIGN: This study randomly sampled 15 hospitals in Beijing from Jun 2013 to Nov 2013 and evaluated 15 194 deliveries. Logistic regression analysis was used to study the association between risk factors and hypertensive disorders. Pregnancy outcomes included preterm birth, cesarean delivery and small for gestational age (SGA). RESULTS: The prevalence of hypertensive disorders, preeclampsia (PE) and severe PE was 4.4, 2.7 and 1.8%, respectively. The risk factors for hypertensive disorders and severe PE were maternal body mass index before pregnancy, gestational weight gain (GWG), gestational diabetes and pre-gestational diabetes, and third trimester cholesterol (CHOL) levels. First trimester high-density lipoprotein was a protective factor for severe PE. The incidence of hypertensive disorders increased with maternal age. Preterm delivery, cesarean delivery and small infant size for gestational age were more prevalent in the severe PE group compared with the non-hypertensive group. CONCLUSIONS: In the Beijing area of China, maternal body mass index before pregnancy, GWG, maternal complications of gestational diabetes and pre-gestational diabetes, and third trimester CHOL levels are risk factors for both hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and severe PE. First trimester high-density lipoprotein is a protective factor for severe PE. Severe preeclampsia leads to a higher incidence of preterm delivery, cesarean delivery and SGA infants.

OBJECTIVE: To use Z-scores to compare different charts of femur length (FL) applied to our population with the aim of identifying the most appropriate chart. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in Beijing. Fifteen hospitals in Beijing were chosen as clusters using a systemic cluster sampling method, in which 15,194 pregnant women delivered from June 20th to November 30th, 2013. The measurements of FL in the second and third trimester were recorded, as well as the last measurement obtained before delivery. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we identified FL measurements from 19996 ultrasounds from 7194 patients between 11 and 42 weeks gestation. The FL data were then transformed into Z-scores that were calculated using three series of reference equations obtained from three reports: Leung TN, Pang MW et al (2008); Chitty LS, Altman DG et al (1994); and Papageorghiou AT et al (2014). Each Z-score distribution was presented as the mean and standard deviation (SD). Skewness and kurtosis and were compared with the standard normal distribution using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The histogram of their distributions was superimposed on the non-skewed standard normal curve (mean = 0, SD = 1) to provide a direct visual impression. Finally, the sensitivity and specificity of each reference chart for identifying fetuses <5th or >95th percentile (based on the observed distribution of Z-scores) were calculated. The Youden index was also listed. A scatter diagram with the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile curves calculated from and superimposed on each reference chart was presented to provide a visual impression. RESULTS: The three Z-score distribution curves appeared to be normal, but none of them matched the expected standard normal distribution. In our study, the Papageorghiou reference curve provided the best results, with a sensitivity of 100% for identifying fetuses with measurements < 5th and > 95th percentile, and specificities of 99.9% and 81.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to choose an appropriate reference curve when defining what is normal. The Papageorghiou reference curve for FL seems to be the best fit for our population. Perhaps it is time to change our reference curve for femur length.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the risk of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in women with different pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). METHODS: We conducted a cohort study with 14 451 singleton pregnancies in 15 medical centers in Beijing between 20 June 2013 and 30 November 2013 using cluster random sampling. We divided participants into four groups based on pre-pregnancy BMI: Group A (underweight): BMI < 18.5 kg/m(2), Group B (normal): 18.5-23.9 kg/m(2), Group C (overweight): 24-27.9 kg/m(2), Group D (obesity): ≥28 kg/m(2). We used multivariate analysis to evaluate the association of the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and pre-pregnancy BMI. RESULTS: The prevalence of maternal overweight and obesity was 14.82% (2142/14 451) and 4.71% (680/14 451) in the study population, respectively. Higher pre-pregnancy BMI is associated with higher prevalence of gestational diabetes (GDM), macrosomia, Cesarean section (C-section), preeclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage. Pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, regardless of GDM status. CONCLUSIONS: Pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity is associated with increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Nutrition counseling is recommended before pregnancy in women who have overweight or obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Clozapine is one of the most commonly used antipsychotic drugs in China. To date, few studies have investigated the patterns the prescription of clozapine nationwide. The present study examined these patterns in China in 2006 and identified the demographic and clinical characteristics associated with the use of clozapine. METHODS: Using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure, we surveyed 5,898 patients with schizophrenia in 10 provinces with differing levels of economic development. RESULTS: Overall, clozapine had been prescribed for 31.9% (n=1,883) of the patients; however we found considerable variation among the 10 provinces. The frequency of clozapine use was highest in Sichuan (39.3%) and lowest in Beijing (17.3%). The mean daily dose of clozapine was 210.36±128.72 mg/day, and 25.1% of the patients were treated with clozapine in combination with other antipsychotics. Compared with the group not receiving clozapine, clozapine-user had been treated for longer durations and had experienced a greater number of relapses and hospitalizations. Furthermore, those in the clozapine-user had lower family incomes, were less able to seek psychiatric services, and more likely to be male and have a positive family history of schizophrenia. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that age, sex, professional help-seeking behaviors, duration of illness, economic status, educational level, and clinical manifestations were associated with the use of clozapine. CONCLUSION: Clozapine use is common in China. However, use of the antipsychotic varies among provinces, and demographic and clinical factors play important roles in the prescription of clozapine.

The treatment groups were trained by progressive intensifying endurance swimming, and the medical-taken groups were fed with lycium for 5 weeks, and then the changes of the liver cellular free radical metabolism and ultrastructure were investigated. The effects of lycium and endurance training on liver cellular ultrastructure and free radical metabolism in rats were then explored. The results showed that exhaustive swimming time of rats could be extended by endurance training, and that exhaustive swimming time of rats could significantly be prolonged after taking lycium, and the ultrastructure of liver cell with taking lycium was more complete than that without taking lyceum. Lycium could cause significant increase of the activity of liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the ratio of SOD/MDA, and meanwhile cause decrease of the content of liver MDA. Conclusions can be drawn that lycium and endurance training can improve exercise capacity of rats, and lycium has certain protecting functions of the liver.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the patterns of antipsychotic use in China and to analyze the factors that influence antipsychotic prescriptions. METHODS: A standardized survey was conducted from May 20 to 24 2002 in five different regions of China with varying economic levels. The patterns of antipsychotic medication use were analyzed in a sample of 4,779 patients with schizophrenia. The survey gathered information on demographic characteristics, clinical profiles, and antipsychotic medications prescribed. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze factors related to patterns of antipsychotic medication use. RESULTS: A plurality of patients with schizophrenia was treated with clozapine (39%); this was followed by risperidone, sulpride, chlorpromazine, perphenazine, and haloperidol. More than 56.3% of patients were treated with only one atypical antipsychotic. The mean daily dose of chlorpromazine was 365±253 mg (mean±standard deviation), and 6.5% of patients were treated with depot injections of typical antipsychotic medications. A total of 73.7% (n=3,523) of patients with schizophrenia received monotherapy, 24.8% (n=1,183) received two antipsychotics, 1.1% (n=52) received three antipsychotics, and one received four different antipsychotics. Patients often simultaneously received other classes of medications including anticholinergic agents, benzodiazepines, ß-blockers, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers. Economic status and clinical symptoms were the main factors that contributed to the patterns of antipsychotic prescription. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that atypical antipsychotic medications, especially clozapine, are the primary psychiatric treatments of choice in the management of schizophrenia in China. Moreover, the economic status and clinical profile of the patient are the major factors affecting the prescription of antipsychotic medication.

MOTIVATION: Analysis of gene expression data can provide insights into the time-lagged co-regulation of genes/gene clusters. However, existing methods such as the Event Method and the Edge Detection Method are inefficient as they compare only two genes at a time. More importantly, they neglect some important information due to their scoring criterian. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to identify time-lagged co-regulated gene clusters. The algorithm facilitates localized comparison and processes several genes simultaneously to generate detailed and complete time-lagged information for genes/gene clusters. RESULTS: We experimented with the time-series Yeast gene dataset and compared our algorithm with the Event Method. Our results show that our algorithm is not only efficient, but also delivers more reliable and detailed information on time-lagged co-regulation between genes/gene clusters. MOTIVATION: Analysis of gene expression data can provide insights into the positive and negative co-regulation of genes. However, existing methods such as association rule mining are computationally expensive and the quality and quantities of the rules are sensitive to the support and confidence values. In this paper, we introduce the concept of positive and negative co-regulated gene cluster (PNCGC) that more accurately reflects the co-regulation of genes, and propose an efficient algorithm to extract PNCGCs. RESULTS: We experimented with the Yeast dataset and compared our resulting PNCGCs with the association rules generated by the Apriori mining algorithm. Our results show that our PNCGCs identify some missing co-regulations of association rules, and our algorithm greatly reduces the large number of rules involving uncorrelated genes generated by the Apriori scheme.
